“Hope was Here” by Joan Bauer

“Hope was Here” by Joan Bauer is fascinating young adult novel that was a recipient of the Newberry Award Medal.

Hope is a sixteen-year-old waitress who lives with her aunt, a diner cook who specializes in comfort food. When the two move from busy New York to a small rural community in Wisconsin, Hope is disappointed. She misses the hustle and activity of big city life.

Soon, though, she discovers that the small town is home to some large personalities. She becomes involved in a heated campaign to elect G.T. Stoop, owner of the Welcome Stairways diner, as mayor. Along the way Hope learns more about her own personality and leave behind her past.

“Hope was Here” introduces its reader to the very soul of the small diner, taking us behind the scenes to see the fast-paced action and down to earth struggles. I would definitely recommend reading this satisfying and memorable book.
