“Dark Water Rising,” by Marian Hale is a historical fiction novel about the powerful hurricane that devastated Galveston Island in 1900.Unlike the rest of his family, sixteen-year-old Seth Braeden is not at all thrilled to be moving to Galveston. Sure he enjoys the great weather and the swimming at the nearby beaches, but to Seth the move to Galveston thwarts one of his most important dreams. Seth wants to be a carpenter like his father, but the family moved to Galveston so that Seth could attend college there and become a doctor.

ReplyDeleteI live in Houston and I thought it was really good, to relate to having to evacuate mulitypull times. It's not a book I would have chosen to read, it was my summer reading book for Texas history. Even if you didn't like it you still need to respect it because lots of peoples hard work went into this and especially the amazing writing skills this author had to use figurative launguage it seemed in every sentence.

ReplyDeleteIts true though. I think it is a great book. If you live on the gulf or east coast, then let it be lesson, because a TC will strike your area. It is a matter of when, not if. If you don't live a hurricane area...then unless you have a interest in weather I wouldnt suggest this book.
ReplyDeleteAlso, if you say who cares about storms, don't call for help when your house floats away with 20+ feet of storm surge. I would suggest preparation. If not, don't expect for FEMA to come and give you anything quickly on a silver platter (*Cough New Orleans*).

ReplyDeletethe first half of the book was very interesting but after that it just gets kind of boring. it was struggling to stay focused while reading but when you are willing to read it, its pretty good. if you are the kind of person who gets distracted easily while reading or like a lot of action during books then i don't recommend this book but if you enjoy reading all kinds of books then definitely read it. and all of the people who hated the book i can see why because obviously you aren't that smart considering you can't spell half the words you wrote(:

Alright now. Im gonna be honest, i absolutely adored this book. I myself live in Texas and have a texas history class that i had to read this book for. In the beginning, i was so narrow minded and instantly thought i was going to /hate/ this book. I admit, the starting was a little slow, but once i got farther, I started to love it ~! Action, Romance, Suspense, and so much more in one book. Now y'all are entitled to your opinions, but please, open your mind before you take these comments to heart. Really read the book. Put yourself in Seth's shoes. I promise, you'll fall in love if you go in with an open mind
