“Jellicoe Road,” by Melina Marchetta

Book Cover Art for Jellicoe Road by Melina Marchetta“Jellicoe Road,” by Melina Marchetta is a very unusual book about the parallels between the lives of two groups of children, and the effect that their decisions and the unique place called Jellicoe Road has on them. The complex social interactions, foreshadowing, and strange clues in the story makes the it slightly difficult to understand, especially at first, but it gives the novel a powerful effect.

The main character is Taylor Markham, a seventeen year old girl who was abandoned by her mother at a gas station on Jellicoe Road when she was eleven. Fortunately she was found by a family friend named Hannah and taken to live at Jellicoe School, a selective state run school for clever children with troubled pasts.

Sounds like a lovely read! I wanted to tell you that as a mother of a pre-teen daughter, your book review wizard is a wonderful tool, in helping me find "quality literature" for my daughter to read, being that we live in a remote area! Keep up the good work! xo~

Thanks for commenting, Marcy.

I'm glad that the Inkweaver Review Book Wizard is useful to you. It is actually still under development. I have many more pages planned to organize the books into different genres, such as the classic "orphan story" or "sad stories." There are so many great books out there, and I want to help match each person to the perfect book.

Thanks again for commenting, and please come again soon.

I had a similar reaction to the seemingly confusing beginning of this novel. I like the way you put it--that the novel makes its reader figure things out as the character living it would.

I agree. I like the way Melina Marchetta pulled that off. The reader gradually becomes attached to Taylor, so that in the end you can see things from her mind as she does.

Her initial confusion is slowly sharpened until she understands the story behind her life even as the reader does.

Thanks for commenting Jeanne.
