“The Other Side of the Island,” by Allegra Goodman

Book Cover Art for The Other Side of the Island by Allegra Goodman“The Other Side of the Island,” by Allegra Goodman is a dystopian style science fiction novel about a girl living in a future time when humans have started enclosing areas of the Earth as a way of dealing with the ruined environment.

Honor and her family have always been slightly eccentric. Although they live on Island 365 in the Tranquil Sea, Honor can sometimes remember a time when they lived somewhere else: somewhere where it snowed and the islands were not enclosed, but open to the sky.

  2. I'm positive that there must be a sequel, because Allegra Goodman left a lot of room for further developments.

Perhaps whether or not a sequel is published will depend on how readers respond to "The Other Side of the Island." So far people seem to like it.....

  3. I enjoyed the book and read it all in about 4 hours. I would love a sequel.
While reading, my mind would often draw parallels between this and Ayn Rand's book "Anthem". Anti-Utopian societies interests me greatly. ^.^

  4. I haven't read "Anthem". I'll have to look into reviewing it.

Personally I love Utopian/Dystopian novels, especially the fantastic series by Lois Lowry. If you click the "Utopian/Dystopian" link on the left sidebar you can find other books that I have reviewed.

  6. I absolutely loved this book! It had a different plotline and I enjoyed the fact that it wasn't your average run of the mill sappy love novel. I got tired of those and this revived my love for books. I really do hope Ms. Goodman writes a sequel. I'll probably be the first to buy it! ha ha lmao

  12. I love this book so much, I did a oral book report on it. I really hope there would be a sequel. At first, I thought it was scary because of the cover, but after I read it, I found that it was wonderful and kinda funny, like Honor's incident with the octopus and how Helix tested to see if the orderlies were actually dead or alive. I hope to read more of Mrs. Goodman's books in the future.

  23. I think this book is totally awesome! :)
But Honor should most definetly be with Helix as a couple like I think Katniss Everdeen (from the "Hunger Games" by Suzanne Collins) and Gale Hawthorne should be together.

  26. I legit just finished this book 1 minute ago and i can't wait for a sequel....it's almost scary how something like this could happen in real life, the "flood", i mean what just happened in japan?! it moved japan 8 feet, and they said it might trigger an earthquake in California, which might trigger more earthquakes, or even the volcano in yellowstone and then we're goners, so this was a little freaky, haha

  27. I just finished this book about two days ago and i was shocked, when i looked on the internet to find that there was not a second book. I really enjoyed this book because it had a lot of action and mystery. When i first picked up this book it seemed like a weird one until i started reading it- and then i wanted to read more. I am really looking forward to reading the next book, so ALLEGRA GOODMAN I HOPE YOU WILL WRITE ONE!!! :)

  35. Honestly, I loved this book. I could hardly put it down when I was reading it. I don't know if other people are like this, but I can get awfully crabby when I'm reading books; the better the book, the worse my attitude towards interruptions. My bad mood escalated to record highs during this book. I am a huge fan of the dystopian society genre, and would die for a sequel. You know, dystopian society stories are so intriguing, and we may even fear them a little bit because of their possible reality in the future. To sum this book up...

    I LOVED IT.

  36. Quote "[refering to the name Honor]Her name was rare and in later cycles it was discontinued." if there is a squeal the rebel group won't win because they say later cycles (at least 2 cycles) that means at least 52 years after Honor was born the name is taken off the list which means the rebels don't win. If there is a squeal it will take place at least 50 years later (and Honor will be dead) or it will all take place on another island with different main and sub charters and most like;y if there is another group of charters the main person name will be Honor or a name that has a silent letter for the first letter. If the squeal will have the original Honor be prepared for a crushing ending.

    I loved the book.

  41. This book was stunning. I Hope Allegra considers doing a sequel. I know quite a few people who really enjoyed this book and would be interested in the sequel. I think she left the book at just the right place for it to leave readers hanging and wanting more.

  45. This book TOTALLY needs a sequel. Allegra Goodman could do SOOOO much with another book! Or, even better, she could make it into a trilogy. Anywho...READ THIS BOOK! It's WONDERFUL!
