Interview with Author Rebecca Stead

About Rebecca Stead

Rebecca Stead grew up in New York City, where she was lucky enough to attend the kind of elementary school where you could sit in a windowsill, or even under a table, and read, or draw, or write, and no one told you to come out and be serious (well, eventually someone did, but not right away). It was here that she began writing.

Rebecca lives in New York with her husband and their two sons. Her second novel, "When You Reach Me", will be published by Wendy Lamb Books in July, 2009.

My daughter showed me a copy of "When You Reach Me" which she bought for her son.

I read it. In the back, Mrs. Stead thanks several people for their contributions. She did not, however, thank John Irving, author of "Prayer for Owen Meany," which was the source of one of the gimmicks she used for the Laughing Man.

I would like to know from Mrs. Stead if she did, indeed, ever read the Irving novel (one of the finest America has produced).

Is there any chance she might see this request?

I really have no idea, Evelyn. If you want to reach Mrs. Stead, I would recommend doing an internet search for "Contact Rebecca Stead". I wouldn't want to give her contact information on this site, but an internet search is how I contacted her for the interview.

With regard to your question, however, I can assure you that there are many repeating symbols and situations in books, from the classics to modern times. There "is nothing new under the sun." Sometimes authors consciously repeat and rework the classics for modern novels, sometimes they unconsciously draw on earlier reading experiences as they write.

Thank you, Nathan. I've done as you suggested and located her email address.

I hope she doesn't consider my inquiry rude.

Above, I note that there are "2 replies." I see only yours. How do I "see" the other one?

Best wishes, Evelyn W.

Alas, Nathan, I now find a notice that the Postmaster "failed" to find the address that was listed for Mrs. Stead.

I guess I'll never know!

Hmm, that's too bad. Sometimes author's change their email address because they receive too much mail. I'm sure that if you keep searching, though, you will eventually find a way to contact Mrs. Stead.

Best of luck in your endeavor,

Nathan

Nathan, I hasten back to add this incredible ending to the tale.

My email did get through to Mrs. Stead, and she replied overnight. I am bowled over by her thoughtful, detailed, really insightful and satisfying answers. My admiration of her is in full bloom!

It's hard to believe such a busy woman took the time and put such effort into writing to a total stranger with such tenderness and modesty as she did. I salute her totally.

I am 80 years old and seldom find such genuineness "out there" as I do in her. May her successes blossom and she thrive.

Wow! I am impressed too. I've found so far that most authors tend to reply to thoughtful queries from their readers. It's how I have been able to interview several fairly major authors in the past.

I'm glad that you finally got the answers you were looking for.
