“The Prophet of Yonwood” by Jeanne DuPrau

“The Prophet of Yonwood” by Jeanne DuPrau, is an excellent prequel to her Books of Ember series. It explains the events leading up to the world disaster that the underground city of Ember was designed to withstand.

The main character is eleven year old Nickie. When Nickie’s family moves to a large mansion the country city of Yonwood, she hopes that here they can finally escape the atmosphere of the large cities where people fear an impending war. But soon Nickie finds that even in Yonwood, people are afraid, for one of the local women has had a “vision” of fiery destruction.

"Walk in the Light" by Leo Tolstoy

“Walk in the Light” is a free e-book that I originally obtained from bruderhof.com. It is an excellent collection of short stories by Leo Tolstoy.

Leo Tolstoy’s tales are almost all at least partially spiritual in nature, discussing the benefits of living a Christian life and the effects of not doing so. They emphasize such themes as sharing with others, avoiding contention and strife within the home and community, and striving to live a virtuous life. This particular collection of Tolstoy’s short stories includes wonderful pieces such as:

  • “What Men Live By” - A tale about what men need above all else.
  • “A Spark Neglected Burns the House” - The story of two feuding neighbors.
  • “Little Girls Wiser than Men” - Two little girls teach an important lesson to a whole community.
  • “How Much Land Does a Man Need?” - A tale about greed.
  • “The Coffeehouse of Surat” - A coffeehouse argument about the nature of God.

“Walk in the Light” is a fine collection of stories by Leo Tolstoy. I would recommending reading this e-book to get a taste of his style and his enjoyable messages.

“The Maze” by Will Hobbs

“The Maze” by Will Hobbs is the story of Rick Walker, a desperate fourteen year old orphan on the run after breaking out of a youth detention center.

Rick Walker finds himself lost in the stark desert canyons of Utah, where he finds the camp of Lon Peregrino, a bird biologist who is working to reintroduce California Condors in the wild. In the process of working with the fledgling condors and exploring the stark canyon landscapes Rick comes to learn more about himself and realize that running away from his problems will not solve them.

“The Maze” is an excellent book about personal growth and development. I would recommend reading it both for its involving action and its worthwhile message.
