“Starclimber,” by Kenneth Oppel is a phenomenal science fiction novel that is third in a series that began with “Airborn” and “Skybreaker.”The “Airborn” series is set in a unique alternate reality world with a distinct Victorian feel. In some ways it is very similar to our world in the 1800’s to early 1900’s. However, in the “Airborn” world lighter than air transportation has reached a much higher degree of development. A special gas called hydrium makes huge airliners and heavy duty airtugs possible. These airships share the skies with heavy than air Leonardo da Vinci style ornithopters, and strange and often dangerous air creatures.

I loved this book and let me just say I'm a girl and it's not just written to one gender, meaning the male, it has romance in it and adventure and fun. I really enjoyed this book, and I haven't even read to two previous books.

Matt Cruse is piloting an aerocrane for the France's Celestial Tower- a huge tower that will be built into outer space- where he narrowly survives a terrorist attack by the Babelites, a group of people who are opposed to humans reaching the heavens. After the incident, he meets with Kate de Vries, and is saddened to hear that Kate will soon return to Lionsgate City, where her wealthy parents want her to marry and settle down.
But things look up when the Canadian government makes an exciting offer to both Matt and Kate. Canada's Minister of Air wants Canadians to be the first in space, and invites Kate to join the expedition as an expert in aerial zoology, while Matt is offered a chance to become one of the world's first astralnauts on board the Starclimber. Learning that the training will be taking place in Lionsgate City, Matt decides to visit his mother and sisters. While he is there, he accepts a party invitation sent by Mr. and Mrs. de Vries. During the party, Matt is informed that Kate's parents will probably marry Kate to James Sanderson, heir to the Sanderson fortune. Upon hearing this, Matt seeks out Mr. Sanderson during the party and makes up stories about Kate's hobby of taking corpses and reviving them with electricity in order to scare him away from Kate. However, Matt's lies, instead of repelling Mr. Sanderson's interest in Kate, leads him to become even more obsessed with Kate and her "work".
Matt is enrolled in the astralnaut program and becomes friends with fellow astralnaut trainee Tobias Blanchard. After a grueling series of tests, three people are chosen to be the first astralnauts, but Matt is not amongst them. When he leaves the room, Kate follows him to try and cheer him up. When she takes his hands, Matt finds an engagement ring on her finger and realizes that she has been engaged to James Sanderson..... Read the rest to find out:D
