This sounds alot like "Chasing Vermeer" by, Blue Balliett.Which by the way is a really good book, may have to look into this one. Thanks
Blue Balliet's art mysteries may seem similar, but in fact Blue Balliet adds a more supernatural and intuitive side to things, whereas this book is more about action.
Blue Balliet's art mystery series has a totally different tone and focus.
